Article Outline

Because of the hundreds of requests that the Journal of Surgical Research editorial staff has received during the past year from its authors, the Publisher has initiated a new service to help streamline and expedite the manuscript publication process of all submitting authors. This month we are pleased to announce that the Journal of Surgical Research is introducing an E-ONLY Pages Section on its full-text Platform: www.journalofsurgicalresearch.com. On the Journal of Surgical Research's full-text web site, our Internet staff has introduced a “navigational button”, titled: E-ONLY PAGES, which promotes rapid publication of accepted articles. Authors may “Opt-In” or “Opt-Out” of this initiative when submitting a manuscript or when transferring copyright after acceptance for publication. Most importantly, for an accepted article in the Journal of Surgical Research “Pipeline”, this expeditious publishing process will allow the article to be published within the next few issues as an E-ONLY Article, rather than after the several months production waiting period for appearance in a print issue.

Academically, E-publishing, from the perspective of a promotion and tenure committee, carries equal weight as a printed journal article and is just as easily retrieved for reading or printing. An article published as an E-ONLY Article does not reduce the article's authenticity, integrity, indexing distribution, visibility, or value compared with an article that publishes, initially, or only, in print. An E-ONLY Article contains all of the same bibliographic details that a print article contains, including Volume, Issue, and DOI Numbers; the only traditional bibliographic item that is excluded is the print page numbers on which the article appears. An E-ONLY Article assumes E-Page numbers using the same sequential pattern used with print page numbers (e.g., E-Only Pages: e1, e2, e3, etc.). The E-ONLY pages would have an asterisk that refers readers to the Journal's Full-Text Site where an individual reader easily locates a Navigational Button titled: E-ONLY Pages. Consequently, both the print and online full-text versions of each issue's Table of Contents would integrate a listing of print articles and E-ONLY Articles. E-publishing is the future of journal publishing, and the Journal of Surgical Research has always been an early adopter of technology that benefits scholarly service. In addition, please remember that this E-ONLY method of delivery allows articles to be officially published much sooner than in the standard print format, and the E-ONLY version is classified, as it is in print, as the Official, Archived Version of Record at the National Library of Medicine.

The Editorial Team and the Publisher encourage you to take advantage of the E-ONLY PAGE option as the “preferred” medium to expedite publication of your scholarly work.
