Cited in Scopus: 17The hallmark of lung ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the resultant oxidant stress has been implicated in apoptotic cell death as well as subsequent development of inflammation. Dietary flaxseed (FS) is a rich source of naturally occurring antioxidants and has been shown to reduce lung IRI in mice. However, the mechanisms underlying the protective effects of FS in IRI remain to be determined. - Musculoskeletal
Involvement of Oxidative Stress in Age-Related Bone Loss

Cited in Scopus: 92Age-related bone loss is a primary factor in osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures in the elderly. Although oxidative stress was reported to play an important role in aging and postmenopausal bone loss, data on relating oxidative stress to age-related bone loss were scanty. This study aimed to investigate whether oxidative stress is involved in age-related bone loss. - Research Review
Oxidative Stress in Laparoscopic Versus Open Abdominal Surgery: A Systematic Review
Journal of Surgical ResearchVol. 169Issue 1e59–e68Published online: February 23, 2011- Reza Arsalani-Zadeh

Cited in Scopus: 57Any form of trauma, including surgery, is known to result in oxidative stress. Increased intra-abdominal pressure during pneumoperitoneum and inflation-deflation may cause ischemia reperfusion and, hence, oxidative stress may be greater during laparoscopic surgery. The aim of this study was to systemically review the literature to compare oxidative stress in laparoscopic and open procedures. - Vascular

Cited in Scopus: 25The present experiments sought to determine whether cilostazol, a selective inhibitor of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) phosphodiesterase 3 (PDE3), suppressed elastase-induced abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) development in a rat model. - Shock/Sepsis/Trauma/Critical Care
Recombinant Factor XIII Mitigates Hemorrhagic Shock-Induced Organ Dysfunction

Cited in Scopus: 20Plasma factor XIII (FXIII) is responsible for stabilization of fibrin clot at the final stage of blood coagulation. Since FXIII has also been shown to modulate inflammation, endothelial permeability, as well as diminish multiple organ dysfunction (MOD) after gut ischemia-reperfusion injury, we hypothesized that FXIII would reduce MOD caused by trauma-hemorrhagic shock (THS). - Shock/Sepsis/Trauma/Critical Care

Cited in Scopus: 79Recently it has been demonstrated that hydrogen, as a novel antioxidant, can selectively reduce hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and peroxynitrite anion (ONOO-) in vitro and exert therapeutic antioxidant activity in many diseases. This study was designed to investigate the effect of hydrogen-rich saline on renal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats. - Shock/Sepsis/Trauma/Critical Care

Cited in Scopus: 55Hydrogen has been proven to be a novel antioxidant through its selectively reducing of the hydroxyl radical. In this study, we investigated the effects of hydrogen-rich saline on the prevention of acute lung injury induced by hyperoxia (HALI) in rats. - Gastrointestinal
Protection Against Severe Intestinal Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Rats by Intravenous Resveratrol
Journal of Surgical ResearchVol. 167Issue 2e145–e155Published online: June 30, 2010- Frank Petrat
- Herbert de Groot
Cited in Scopus: 29Repetitive enteral or intraperitoneal administration of resveratrol at high doses has recently been found to protect the small intestine against acute ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. In the present work, the protective potential of solvent-free continuous intravenous infusions of small amounts of resveratrol was studied in a model of severe intestinal I/R injury. - Cardiothoracic
Leupeptin Preserves Cardiac Nitric Oxide Synthase 3 During Reperfusion Following Long-Term Cardioplegia

Cited in Scopus: 2The objective of this study was to investigate how long-term cardioplegia/reperfusion affects cardiac nitric oxide synthase 3 (NOS3). To this aim, rat hearts were mounted in a perfusion apparatus and equilibrated with a modified Krebs-Henseleit solution (KH). The hearts were then arrested by soaking them in cold St. Thomas Hospital II solution (STH) for 5, 7, and 15 h. Reperfusion was performed by low-flow cold STH delivering for 1 h followed by 15-min aerobic normothermic KH perfusion. Cardioplegia preserved the amount of NOS3 irrespective of the duration of the cardiac arrest. - Shock/Sepsis/Trauma/Critical Care
Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor (MIF) and Manganese Superoxide Dismutase (MnSOD) as Early Predictors for Survival in Patients with Severe Sepsis or Septic Shock

Cited in Scopus: 27Severe sepsis, septic shock, and resulting organ failure appear as the most common cause of death in intensive care medicine. Inflammatory mediators (interleukin-6/IL-6), cell adhesion molecules (intercellular adhesion molecule-1/ICAM-1, vascular cell adhesion molecule-1/VCAM-1), and redox active substances (manganese superoxide dismutase/MnSOD, macrophage migration inhibitory factor/MIF) must be considered to be central hubs in the inflammatory process. However, their exact pathophysiologic function and prognostic value are still poorly understood. - Gastrointestinal

Cited in Scopus: 8We previously have shown that platonin, a potent antioxidant, significantly attenuated inflammatory molecules up-regulation in RAW264.7 cells, a murine macrophage-like cell line. Inflammatory molecules expression is under the regulation of activator protein-1 (AP-1), a crucial transcription factor and a heterodimeric protein that composes of proteins from c-Jun and c-Fos families. AP-1 expression is regulated by mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). We sought to elucidate the effects of platonin on MAPKs and AP-1 up-regulation in activated RAW264.7 cells. - Research Article
Immediate but Not Delayed Postconditioning During Reperfusion Attenuates Acute Lung Injury Induced by Intestinal Ischemia/Reperfusion in Rats: Comparison with Ischemic Preconditioning

Cited in Scopus: 25A previous study has shown that brief period of repetitive superior mesenteric artery (SMA) occlusion and reperfusion applied at the onset of reperfusion, ischemic postconditioning (IPo), attenuates intestinal injury after intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (II/R). This study tested the hypothesis that IPo would attenuate II/R-induced acute lung injury, which is comparable to ischemic preconditioning (IPC) and the brief period of postconditioning applied at the onset of reperfusion is critical to pulmonary protection by IPo.
